Children instinctively advocate for their right to play, whether they sit quietly for the promise of a reward or run boldly out the door. Beneath these everyday moments lies something profound: the human drive to explore, connect, create, and make meaning. Through the lens of the neurobiology of learning, we understand that learning is more than the acquisition of knowledge. It is shaped by our nervous systems, our relationships, and the environments in which we grow. Beginning in early childhood, play creates opportunities for curiosity, connection, and discovery in ways we are only beginning to realize.
Play Dirt Projects reimagines the future of our school system by putting play, relationships, and human potential at the heart of learning. Grounded in trauma-informed and neuro-affirming practices, this work challenges approaches that prioritize compliance over curiosity and correction over connection. Instead, we ask what becomes possible when educational environments honor the diverse ways humans communicate, process, regulate, and learn.
When play is understood as integral to learning, it transforms not only what we do but how we understand one another. It invites us to create environments where children and adults can strengthen connections within themselves and with others, building the foundations for agency, belonging, and collective liberation.
Play recognizes the inherent gifts each human brings into the world and creates space for those gifts to emerge, evolve, and become lasting contributions to a larger community. Play Dirt Projects is an invitation to imagine, design schools where learning is rooted in connection rather than control, curiosity rather than compliance, and the humanity and dignity of every child is honored.
